5 Summer Hair Care Tips

Summer is here, and the weather is gorgeous. But all those days spent in the pool, on the beach, or hiking the trails are wreaking havoc on your hair. So what can you do if your style is looking more fried than flawless? We have five summer hair care tips to help restore and protect your tresses.

Let Loose

As much as we love the occasional sleek ponytail, tight styles are hard on your hair. And since the elements are already doing a number on your tresses, it’s a good idea to give your hair a break.

Try wearing your hair down more often to let it rest. When you do put your hair up, opt for a loose style, like a messy braid. It won’t damage your already-dry tresses, and the carefree vibe is perfect for summer.

Try an ACV Rinse

Are you sporting the dreaded green mane after swimming? That not-so-flattering green is caused by the interaction of copper and chlorine in pool water. Combat it with an apple cider vinegar rinse. Just mix two cups of water with ¼ cup of apple cider vinegar, and pour it over your tresses.

Some people recommend rinsing after swimming to help reduce discoloration. Others, however, advocate saturating your strands with an ACV rinse before swimming, so copper and other minerals have a harder time entering your hair.

Get a Trim

The healthier your hair is at the beginning of summer, the better it will be able to withstand everything summer throws at it. So if you’ve been considering trying out a new summer ‘do (check out this summer’s hottest trends here!), now is the perfect time to do it.

Getting a trim or cut rids your hair of split ends so you start the summer with strong, healthy locks that won’t be as prone to damage or frizz. And don’t forget to keep up with your trims, too. Hair growth accelerates in the summer, so frequent trims will help keep your hair looking its best.

Block the Sun

Your hair is susceptible to UV damage, just like your skin. So don’t forget to apply a UV protection product to your hair. It’ll help stave off sun damage and prevent your color from fading as quickly, too.

Covering your hair is also important if you’ll be spending a lot of time in the sun. That’s because the best way to protect your strands from UV rays is simply not to expose them to the sun at all. So if you’re going to be out all day at a concert, amusement park, or beach, accessorize with your cutest wide-brimmed hat. Your hair will be protected from UV rays, and so will your scalp and ears.

Shampoo Less Often

We know that summer activities often make your hair look dirty and greasy. And we’re not saying you shouldn’t shower after running your Tough Mudder course. But try to aim for washing three or four times a week when you can.

Spacing out your washes prevents your hair’s natural protective oils from being stripped, which is especially important in the summer. If you do need a refresh between showers, use dry shampoo instead. It’ll soak up excess oil without stripping your strands.

Summer can be harsh on your hair, but following these tips will help keep your tresses in top shape. And remember, Viori is perfect for traveling, so don’t forget to bring your favorite bars along to all your summer activities!
