Summer is almost here, and what's better than getting out in nature for a camping trip? Whether you camp with friends, family, or volunteer with an organization like the Girl Scouts, camping is a great way to decompress from the hustle and bustle of our daily lives.
Can't you just smell the campfire and taste the s'mores now? Mmm.
As wonderful as camping is, it's not without its challenges, including keeping your hair clean. But getting back to nature doesn't mean you have to look (or smell!) like you've never heard of shampoo! Here are six tips to help you care for your hair while camping.
Wash Before You Go
Most of us wash our hair too often and can go a few days between washes. If you wash your hair the day you're leaving for your trip, you should have a few solid days of clean hair before you need to worry about washing it--as long as you don't fall in a puddle on your hike, of course!
Skip Styling Products
Everyone likes to look good, even while camping, but this is one time you might want to opt for a simple ponytail or braid instead of styling your hair. Products build up on your hair, and if you combine that with the soil, pollen, leaves, twigs, etc., you're likely to be exposed to while camping, your hair will look dirty pretty quickly.
Dry Shampoo
If there are times you don't have access to enough water to wash your hair, dry shampoo will soak up excess oil and help you feel fresh a little longer. Remember, though, that most dry shampoo is white, so you'll really need to brush your hair thoroughly to keep it from showing. And although it will cut down on oil, it may also leave your hair looking dull, so only use it when necessary.
Wear a Bandana or Hat
There's a reason bandanas and hats have long been quintessential camp girl style. They don't just look super cute; they protect your hair from a lot of debris. And bandanas also keep your hair off your face and neck, which helps cut down on the amount of sweat that winds up in your hair.
Consider a Camp Shower
Many campsites have showers available, but what if you're spending time farther away from civilization? A camp shower can be a great solution. They're typically a large bag that warms in the heat of the sun. Gravity pulls the water down through the showerhead when you open the valve. They only hold a limited amount of water, and the pressure won't be great, but it's enough to give you a quick wash.
Pack Your Viori
Viori bars are a great choice for camping because there's no liquid to spill, they won't add a ton of weight to your pack, and they're made of natural ingredients that won't harm the environment. It only takes a small amount of water to work up a good lather and get your hair clean. So whether you have a shower on-site, a camp shower, or you want to take a leaf out of the Red Yao's book and use some (clean!) river water, you can count on Viori to quickly wash and condition your hair.
So what are you waiting for? Pack the tent and hit the trails!
