7 Tips to Combat the Winter Frizz

7 Tips to Combat the Winter Frizz

Winter is in full swing, and it’s doing a number on your hair. You dream of looking cute and cozy. But you actually look like you’ve been rubbing a balloon on your hair instead of combing it. So where is all the frizz coming from, and what can you do about it? Here are seven tips to combat the winter frizz.

Wash Sparingly

Combatting the winter frizz is all about keeping the moisture your hair needs inside the hair shaft. Unfortunately, some of your hair’s natural oils are removed every time you shampoo. So if you’re noticing a lot of frizz, try adding another day or two between washes. If your hair seems greasy at the roots, touch up with dry shampoo between washes.

Don’t Skip the Conditioner

Using conditioner after every wash is super important. If you don’t, your cuticles will be left open, allowing moisture to escape and friction to build up. So use a good moisturizing conditioner like Hidden Waterfall every time you wash your hair. And consider adding a DIY hair mask once a week if you need more moisture.

Change How You Dry

The way you dry your hair has a big impact on how frizzy it is. Avoid blow drying, which pulls moisture from your hair. And ditch the bath towel, too. Their rough fibers can damage your cuticles, leading to even more frizz. Instead, air dry, use a microfiber towel, or try hair plopping to combat the winter frizz.

Use Silk and Satin

Towels aren’t the only fabrics that can cause frizz. Your pillowcase, hair wraps, and accessories can, too. If you wake up with frizzy hair, try switching to a satin or silk pillowcase. It’ll help your hair retain moisture and won’t build up static electricity the way other fabrics will. Satin and silk hair wraps and ties will also help your hair stay smooth and frizz-free.

Try a New ‘Do

Trying out a new haircut could be just the solution you need to combat the winter frizz. You’ll cut off the damaged and split ends that contribute to winter frizz. And a new haircut may help your hair lie more smoothly, too. Long layers are great for taming frizz in curly hair, while blunt cuts work well if you have straight hair.

Turn Down the Temperature

Heat is your enemy when it comes to frizzy hair. So turn down the temperature in the shower and rinse in cold water whenever possible. It’s a good idea to skip the heat tools, too. Instead, wear your hair au naturel or turn to styles like braids, twists, and buns that don’t require heat.

Choose the Right Ingredients

The ingredients in your hair care products also make a world of difference to your tresses. Stay away from drying ingredients like alcohol and silicone. And instead, opt for nourishing ingredients like natural oils, aloe vera, cocoa butter, shea butter, and rice water. They’ll add moisture to your strands and help seal your cuticles so your hair stays smooth.
