Dandruff: The Ultimate Guide to Getting Rid of It

Is there anything worse than looking down during a meeting and seeing white flakes all over your black blazer? Or checking the mirror during your date and noticing your shoulders are covered in dandruff? Not to mention the itching and sores.

There’s no doubt about it–dandruff is the worst. Fortunately, you’re not stuck shedding embarrassing flakes forever. Here’s the ultimate guide to getting rid of dandruff.

Switch Your Shampoo

There are loads of shampoos on the market that claim to fight dandruff, but sometimes, they just make your problems worse. That’s a truth you’ve probably learned the hard way if you’ve been dealing with dandruff for a long time.

But don’t give up! Instead of opting for stronger and stronger shampoos, try a different approach. Often, using a gentle shampoo works better. Viori bars are formulated to be gentle on all hair types. And they contain soothing ingredients like rice water, aloe vera, and shea butter.

Wash Less Frequently

We get it–having dandruff can make you feel, well, gross. So you start washing your hair every day to try to get rid of it. The problem is, that’s only going to dry your hair more and make your dandruff problem worse.

Instead, try spacing out your wash days to two or three times a week. That will allow your natural oils to stay on your hair longer. There may be an adjustment period but stick with it. If you feel like your hair is too oily, opt for a gentle dry shampoo between washes. And don’t forget that you should always follow shampoo with conditioner!

Give Yourself a Product Break

If you’re someone who uses tons of styling products, it’s possible that any one of them could be contributing to your dandruff issue. Try taking a break from all your products to give your hair time to recover.

Once you’re free of dandruff, you can add them back in one by one. If your dandruff comes back, you’ll know which one is the culprit.

Use Hydrating Ingredients

If your hands are dry and itchy, what’s the first thing you turn to? Lotion, right? That’s because it adds much-needed moisture to your skin. The same is true for your hair. If you’re suffering from dandruff, you need to add moisture.

Look for hydrating ingredients, like coconut oil, aloe vera, cocoa butter, shea butter, rice bran oil, and rice water, to give your hair the moisture it needs. You can learn more about the hydrating ingredients in Viori bars here. Need even more moisture? Try whipping up a DIY hair mask.

Give Yourself Some TLC

Your hair can’t be healthy if it doesn’t have what it needs to thrive. Stress can contribute to dandruff, and so can the foods you eat. Some foods may trigger dandruff, while others can help you get rid of it.

So take time to destress every day. And make sure you’re eating plenty of healthy foods like nuts, seeds, berries, tempeh, sauerkraut, and yogurt to give your hair the nutrition it needs. You may need to avoid foods like refined sugar, nightshades, and fried foods if you find that they trigger your dandruff.

Remember, dandruff can be caused by a variety of factors, so if you’re not seeing results, talk to your doctor. You may need targeted treatments for fungus or bacteria.

Once you’ve bid goodbye to your dandruff, keep a healthy hair routine in place. Need help choosing the right Viori bars for you? Take our hair quiz here.
