For many years, we’ve associated natural ingredients with being ineffective. But after learning that chemicals like phthalates, parabens, and sulfates were linked to everything from skin irritation to breast cancer, people began to seek out natural ingredients instead.
In the process, we’ve begun to learn that natural ingredients are both effective and good for you. That’s a lesson we personally learned when we visited the Red Yao women and were stunned by their long, healthy, ageless hair. They are living proof that not only are natural ingredients effective, but they can result in extraordinarily healthy hair.
Like anything else, however, it’s good to know what you’re putting on your hair. After all, arsenic is natural, but you wouldn’t want it in your shampoo! (Eek!) Let’s look at some natural ingredients and how they improve hair health.
Rice
It’s amazing that the Red Yao have known Longsheng rice water was a powerful hair care ingredient for centuries, yet many of us are just beginning to catch on. Rice water contains multiple healthy components, like vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and amino acids.
It also contains inositol, which strengthens and repairs your hair. And it reduces friction, so your hair will be smoother and less likely to break. Plus, it stays on your hair, so you’ll keep reaping benefits between washes. Yes, please!
Citrus
If you have dandruff and excess oil, citrus is your friend. We all naturally produce an oily substance called sebum, but having too much creates problems.
Sebum plays an important role in keeping our hair and skin from drying out. However, an overabundance of sebum can lead to things like oily hair and acne.
Citrus breaks up the excess sebum to keep your scalp and hair in better balance. And it smells pretty amazing, too!
Aloe Vera
At some point, you’ve probably put aloe vera on a cut or sunburn. It’s soothing, right? Did you know it does the same thing for your scalp?
If your scalp is irritated by traditional products, aloe vera will help calm the inflammation. Plus, it encourages growth, increases shine, and reduces dandruff, too. Win!
Cocoa Butter
Have you ever had horribly dry skin in the winter and softened it with cocoa butter? Or maybe you’ve used cocoa butter to help prevent or reduce stretch marks. Cocoa butter provides similar benefits to your hair.
Much like cocoa butter softens and conditions your skin, it also softens, moisturizes, and conditions your hair and scalp. And the smell? Mmm.
Bamboo
Bamboo is pretty sturdy stuff. It’s often used in construction because it has a tensile strength comparable to steel.
And it grows really quickly. Some species are able to grow three feet in 24 hours! That’s pretty incredible.
The benefits for your hair are incredible, too, because you get to harness all that growing power. Bamboo promotes growth, increases shine and helps repair your hair.
Although we’ve only mentioned a few here, the natural world is full of beneficial ingredients that can improve the health of your hair.
