How to Prevent Frizzy Hair

Does it ever seem like all your friends are rocking perfectly coifed curls, beachy waves, or silky smooth straight hair, and you’ve just got...well, fuzz? You’re not alone in dealing with frizzy hair. We all have frizzy hair from time to time, especially in the heat and humidity. And the good news is there are steps you can take to prevent it.

Shampoo Sparingly

We get it. It’s hot, and you’re sweaty. You want to wash. But shampooing too frequently is only going to make your frizz problem worse.

Every time you shampoo your hair, your cuticles are lifted, and the protective oils are washed away. If your shampoo also has harsh, drying ingredients, you’re in for a double-whammy.

Instead, wear a headband or scarf to keep sweat out of your hair, so you don’t feel like you need to wash it so frequently. And when you do wash, always follow up with conditioner to hydrate your hair and seal your cuticles. We recommend Hidden Waterfall for a gentle, moisturizing experience.

Put the Brush Down

If you’re already dealing with frizz, brushing your hair when it’s dry isn’t going to help. In fact, brushing dry hair is more likely to break it and cause your hair to look even more frizzy. No matter how tempting it is to brush your hair when it’s frizzy, just don’t.

Instead, comb through your hair while it’s still damp and add some conditioner or an anti-frizz product. It’s important to do this before your hair dries and has a chance to develop frizz.

If you develop fly-aways later in the day, tame just those pieces with a little hairspray or conditioner applied via a clean mascara wand or toothbrush.

Sleep on Satin

Tossing and turning in the night creates a lot of friction, and cotton pillowcases also absorb moisture and oil from your hair. If you wake up with frizzy hair, it’s time to consider a change.

Switching to a silk or satin pillowcase reduces friction and helps keep more of your natural sebum where it belongs--on your hair. That’s why changing your pillowcases is one of the simplest and most effective ways to reduce frizz.

Cut the Heat

Heat causes your hair to lose moisture, so wherever possible, protect your hair from the heat. Don’t blow dry or heat style if you can avoid it. When you do use heat styling, use a protective spray and put the diffuser on your blow dryer.

Turning the temperature down in your shower also helps. And covering your hair with a scarf or hat makes it more difficult for your hair to react to humidity and develop frizz.

Mask Up

Sometimes, the heat and humidity just seem to sap the moisture from our hair, no matter what we try. When that happens, it’s time for a moisturizing mask.

For a simple DIY mask, try mashing an avocado with a few tablespoons of coconut oil. Spread the mask on your hair, cover it, and leave it for half an hour before washing. Voila, smooth, hydrated hair!

You don’t have to resign yourself to having frizzy hair for life. It may be challenging to keep the frizz at bay, but it’s not impossible. Try the above tips, and you’ll be well on your way to having the smooth, shiny hair you want.

Has switching to Viori helped your frizzy hair? We’d love to see your results.

Hi Shirley! That’s a wonderful question! Yes, if you’re seeing that your ends need more moisture and hydration, we’d recommend trying that out to see how it does. Ultimately, you know your hair best! Please keep us posted on your results. 😊

Hi Pamela! Thanks for your comment! We’d recommend Citrus Yao if your scalp is oily and we recommend Hidden Waterfall, Terrace Garden or Native Essence if your scalp is dry.

We’ve read in several of our customer’s reviews that our bars hold their color/highlights really well and also hydrates their hair. Because our products are in bar form, we recommend getting a lather in your palm and work it through your hair with your hands rather than rubbing the bar directly on your head. This will help preserve your color better. Let us know if you have any more questions!

Hi! Loving these bars!♡
Question on the conditioner bar: is it possible to add just a little to dry hair – just on the ends- for added repair and to smooth fly aways? If so, would you moisten the bar light on your hands and then press it on the ends?
Thanks!

Great question, Lilian! Yes, our bars are formulated to help revive, rejuvenate and nurture all hair and scalp types. We have had some great feedback from our curly-haired customers who use Viori Shampoo and Conditioner. They’ve reported great results! We are also CGM friendly. You can read a few of our reviews here: https://viori.com/pages/reviews.

When it comes to finding the best bar for your hair, it will actually depend on what your scalp type is. If you feel your scalp type is more oily, then we recommend using the Citrus Yao bars because citrus breaks down oil the best. If your scalp is dry, we recommend the Terrace Garden, Native Essence or Hidden Waterfall. If you feel it’s normal and doesn’t really lean too much to one way or the other, then you would be fine using any of the bars. 💕
