How to Care for Fine Hair

Fine hair, like fine china, requires some extra TLC to keep it in top condition. If you have fine hair, you know it often seems like your wispy strands are equally as likely to give you a delicate, soft beauty as they are to become greasy, break, or rise up all over your head in flyaways. Thankfully, with the right routine, your hair can shine in all its fine glory. Here’s how to care for fine hair.

Eliminate Heavy Products

You may feel like you have to layer on all the products to try to achieve a little volume and keep your flyaways in check. But all those heavy products build up on your hair and weigh down your roots. Instead, opt for light, water-permeable styling products, and don’t use anything heavy like mousse or gel on your roots.

Cut Back on Heat Styling

Heat styling is another way those of us with fine hair try to tame our tresses, but it’s also another method that does more harm than good. Heat styling and blow drying are super harsh on your mane, and that creates extra problems for fine hair. Instead, embrace the 75% rule and avoid blow-drying your hair until you’ve allowed it to air-dry 75% of the way. And whenever possible, use non-heat styling methods, like braids or rollers, to add waves and curls.

Trim Often

Because fine hair is vulnerable to split ends and breakage, regular trims are important. Regularly removing split ends keeps them from traveling up the hair shaft. For best results, stylists recommend getting a trim every six to eight weeks if you have fine hair.

Watch How You Sleep

Since fine hair is so prone to breakage and tangles, it’s important to care for it even while you sleep. Consider sleeping in protective styles, like braids, and wrap your hair or switch to silk pillowcases. Sleeping on silk is beneficial because it helps your hair retain moisture and reduces friction from tossing and turning in the night, leading to fewer tangles and less broken hair.

Shampoo Sparingly

Sebum can be a real problem for fine hair. Your hair is thinner, so it’s easy for sebum to weigh it down and make it look greasy. You might be tempted to wash every day, but that will likely make the problem worse. That’s because washing too frequently dries your hair out, and your body responds by increasing oil production. Instead, try shampooing every two or three days and avoid ingredients like sulfates and silicone that tend to dry or weigh down your hair. If your hair looks too greasy between washes, opt for dry shampoo to soak up the extra oil.

Don’t Skip the Conditioner

Many people with fine hair skip conditioner because they’re afraid it will make their hair flat and greasy. In reality, conditioning fine hair is a critical step. When you wash your hair, the hair cuticle is opened and is not sealed again unless you use conditioner. And leaving your cuticle open makes your hair more prone to drying and breakage, which is already an issue for those with fine hair. In contrast, conditioning your hair after every wash helps strengthen your strands and seal in moisture. Plus, it’ll be much less prone to frizz and flyaways.
