Plastic-Free
Without change, there could be a greater quantity of plastic than fish in the ocean by 2050. Recycling statistics are dismal, too, with a mere 9% of the total plastic we have produced ever being recycled. It’s a huge problem. And because virtually all plastic is made from non-renewable resources like oil and coal, which are both finite and pollute the Earth, we all need to do what we can to reduce our dependence on single-use plastics.
We knew when we started Viori that we didn’t want to contribute to our planet’s plastic problem. Making shampoo and conditioner bars eliminates the need to use plastic bottles, but we didn’t stop there. We don’t use plastic in any of our packaging or shipping containers. Instead, we use recycled paper, and all our packaging is biodegradable, sustainable, and recyclable.
Safe Ingredients
Unfortunately, it’s not just the bottles that are harmful when it comes to most shampoo and conditioner. The ingredients can be pretty terrible for the environment, too. Remember, your shampoo and conditioner go down the drain and ultimately find their way back into the environment, so what you use matters.
For example, sulfates make surface water and soil more acidic, harming the surrounding environment. Parabens have been found in water, sediment, fish, and marine mammals. Plus, they’ve been known to kill coral. Triclosan causes reproductive damage to fish. And formaldehyde is linked to a host of health problems in wildlife, along with releasing carbon monoxide and formic acid into the environment.
You’ll never find any of those ingredients in a Viori bar. We use only natural ingredients like Longsheng rice water, bamboo, aloe vera, cocoa butter, and shea butter in our shampoo and conditioner bars.
Sustainable
Sustainability is important. Our planet has finite resources, so we need to make sure they last. And when we engage in sustainable practices, we’re also helping to ensure those resources are shared more equitably, so others don’t need to engage in behaviors that harm the Earth in order to survive. At Viori, we address both of those goals.
We use ingredients like Longsheng rice water and bamboo that are easily grown and replenished. And when it comes to sourcing our ingredients, we spend a lot of time vetting potential suppliers so that we can be sure we meet our sustainability goals. We interact directly with our suppliers and make sure we are provided with certification.
Our Longsheng rice comes directly from Red Yao villagers we personally know. It is all grown naturally and sustainably, the way it has been for over 2,000 years. And because we want to help the Red Yao preserve both their pristine environment and their cultural traditions, we purchase our Longsheng rice at a 100% markup.
