Step 1: Get a Trim

If your hair is badly damaged, a trim will help get rid of split ends, so your tresses are in better shape to start with. And since you’re going to be skipping all the products you’ve been using, it’ll also help keep hair from tangling. That’s important since we’re trying to restore health, not increase breakage.

Step 2: Eat a Healthy Diet

Remember, your hair is part of your body, too, so it’s important to nourish it from the inside out. Choose foods high in antioxidants like blueberries. Citrus fruits are wonderful for vitamin C. And nuts and seeds are great choices to give your hair some Omega-3 fatty acids to bump up the shine.

Step 3: Use a DIY Hair Detox Mask

This super simple mask will help rid your hair of chemical buildup and soothe your scalp at the same time. And it only requires three ingredients! Just mix up ½ cup each of aloe vera gel, apple cider vinegar, and bentonite clay powder.

The clay helps absorb impurities and adds minerals. The apple cider vinegar helps cut through all the product buildup. And aloe vera is soothing to your scalp.

Apply the mask throughout your hair and scalp, then cover with a shower cap and leave it on for about half an hour. Then rinse with apple cider or white vinegar. As with any new product, you should test a small patch for irritation before using the mask on your whole head.

Step 4: Avoid Heat and Chemical Products

The goal of a hair detox is to give your hair a break from everything that damages it. Don’t backtrack on your progress by using chemicals or even heat styling.

Choose styles that don’t require heat. This is a great time for a simple ponytail or hair wrap. Or just let your hair be loose and completely natural.

Step 5: Use Gentle Shampoos and Conditioners

You want to avoid chemicals in everything, so choose natural products. Viori is an awesome choice for a hair detox because we only use natural ingredients. After all, our products were developed under the tutelage of the Red Yao, who wash their hair in the river using a rice water shampoo">rice water shampoo recipe that has been handed down through generations. It doesn’t get much more natural than that!

All of our bars are excellent choices to use during your hair detox, but if you want to avoid scented products, try Native Essence. While it has no added fragrance, the natural ingredients the bar is made from give it a light earthy scent.
