Improving Healthcare Access: Traditional Chinese Medicine Comes to Longsheng

Improving Healthcare Access: Traditional Chinese Medicine Comes to Longsheng

Every month Viori's sustainability team visits Longsheng to spend time with our friends in the village and get an update on our local Beautiful Reason Initiatives. Below is a recap of the trip we made in January 2023.
--------------------------------------------------------------------

During our recent visit to Longsheng, we learned that many villagers, especially the aunties, faced chronic pains and conditions with limited access to professional medical consultations due to the remote location.

To address this issue, we invited a well-known Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) doctor from the nearby city of Guilin to visit Longsheng. The doctor spent a weekend with the Red Yao community, providing expert care and examining their ailments.

Through interviews and consultations, we discovered the villagers' need for professional healthcare. Some had been dealing with pains for years but couldn't afford to travel to the city or find suitable medical assistance.

The TCM doctor used various traditional methods, including "moxibustion," to treat over 50 villagers.

Moxibustion is a traditional healing technique used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It involves the burning of dried mugwort (a medicinal herb) near or on specific acupuncture points on the body. The heat generated by the burning mugwort stimulates these acupuncture points, promoting the flow of Qi (vital energy) and blood circulation, and facilitating healing and pain relief.

The villagers expressed their appreciation for the treatment and expressed a desire for regular sessions to address their long-term pains and ailments. Some even experienced significant pain reduction after just one session.

Understanding the physical demands of village life, the doctor also provided practical life tips to improve habits and ensure better body care. These tips included advice on posture, exercises, and self-care practices to prevent injuries and reduce strain.

We want to express our gratitude for your support in making this initiative possible. Your contributions allowed us to bring much-needed healthcare services to the Red Yao Tribe in Longsheng, improving their quality of life and providing relief from chronic conditions.

Stay tuned for more Longsheng updates!
