You’ve heard that you should use dry shampoo between washes, but you're skeptical. Is dry shampoo really effective? Here are four tips to know.
Don’t Expect It to Cleanse
Despite the name, dry shampoo doesn’t work like your regular shampoo. So if you expect it to cleanse your hair, you’ll be disappointed. Instead, dry shampoo is meant to soak up excess oil, freshen your hair between washes, and add volume.
While dry shampoo is great for helping your tresses feel fresh and clean between washes, you’ll still need to use your regular shampoo two to three times per week. Otherwise, all the dirt, debris, and products you use will remain on your hair.
Ingredients Matter
There are a lot of dry shampoos on the market, and they won’t all affect your hair the same way. If you’ve ever tried dry shampoo and been left with gritty or gray hair, you know what we mean. And it’s understandable if you’re skeptical after that experience!
Unfortunately, many dry shampoos contain alcohol, which can be pretty harsh on your hair. In fact, applying drying ingredients like alcohol too often or going too long without washing your hair can dry out your mane, leaving your scalp irritated and your hair vulnerable to breakage.
Instead, look for a dry shampoo that contains nourishing ingredients that won’t excessively dry out your hair. Our Sunrise Mist dry shampoo, for example, contains the same Longsheng rice found in our shampoo and conditioner bars, along with other soothing ingredients like sea clay and maranta arundinacea root powder
Dry Shampoo is Useful!
While dry shampoo doesn’t wash your hair, it’s still super useful! That’s because overwashing your hair is a real problem. Your hair needs to retain its natural oils to stay healthy. But when you shampoo too often, those oils are stripped away.
That’s where dry shampoo comes in. If you notice your tresses are getting a bit too oily between washes, just apply a bit of dry shampoo to your roots, and voilà! Your strands are beautiful and bouncy again.
Dry shampoo is also great for adding volume and texture, helping your blowout last longer, and freshening up on hot days. It’s also really useful if you’re sick, ill, or disabled and can’t shower as often as you’d like. And it’s great to take along when you’re camping, too.

Know How to Use It
For the best results, you need to know how to properly use dry shampoo. Just spraying or sprinkling it over your head won’t cut it. You’ll need to focus only on the oily areas, and be sparing with your dry shampoo. You can always add more if you need it, but it’s harder to remove excess dry shampoo before you wash.
Once you apply the dry shampoo, blend it into your scalp with your fingers. That way, it’ll absorb more evenly. And it’s less likely to be visible, too.
Remember, tinted dry shampoo blends in more easily than white shampoo will. And if you find that you’ve added too much in one area, just gently comb your hair to remove the excess powder.
