The Wet Look — How To Get It This Summer

The wet look is everywhere this summer. With everyone from runway models to A-list celebs sporting wet-look locks, this look is having a serious moment. But if you’ve tried to achieve the wet look yourself, you know it’s easy to end up with hair that looks greasy or feels crunchy instead.

Fortunately, we’re in on the secret to successfully pulling off this style. Here’s how to get the wet look this summer.

Wash and Towel Dry Your Hair

The first step to getting the wet look is to actually get your hair wet. You want to thoroughly wash your hair before you start, so there’s no leftover product or grime that might make your hair look dingy.

After washing, blot your hair dry with a towel. Aim to get your hair about 60% dry. That way, it’s still got plenty of moisture without being dripping wet. Use a wide-tooth comb to get rid of any tangles so your hair is ready to style.

Apply the Right Products

Here’s where things get tricky. Because everyone’s hair texture is different, there’s no magic one-size-fits-all product or combo that works on everyone. That means you may need to do a little experimentation to find what works best for your hair. But don’t worry, we have some suggestions to get you started.

  • Gel–For some hair textures, a gel will work on its own. Start with a small amount and concentrate on the roots first. Then, work the gel through the rest of your hair. If you have long hair, try stopping around the middle of your hair to avoid having your style look too greasy. High-shine gel works particularly well with textured hair.

  • Cream and Gel Combo–For many people, mixing cream and gel together is the perfect solution. The cream keeps the gel from getting crunchy, and the gel keeps the cream from looking too greasy. Remember to start small. You can always add more, but you can’t take the product away without washing. Try a dime-sized amount to start and work up from there.

  • Hair Spray–If you want the wet look but hate having all your hair weighed down, try using hair spray on all but the top sections of your hair. It’ll hold your hair down and allow you to pull off the style while being more comfortable to wear. Then, add your choice of products to the top layers to create the wet look.

  • Gel and Conditioner–If gel alone is too heavy, combining gel with conditioner is often just the trick you need. If you’re using a Viori bar, try applying the conditioner first, then working a small amount of gel through your hair.

  • Conditioner–If you have fine or thin hair, conditioner alone may be enough to achieve the wet look. Just slide your Viori bar down your strands and comb it through. Voilà! And bonus, your hair will be super conditioned by the end of the day!

  • Finish

The last step is styling and finishing your hair. Comb your hair straight back, tousle it with your fingers, or tie it back into your preferred style. Then, finish your look with glycerine, glossing spray, or leave-in serum. This helps you keep the wet look all day instead of having your locks dry out or become dull.

The wet look may take some experimentation to find the right product or combo that works for you, but it’s so worth it in the end. So grab your favorite Viori bar, gather your products, and start creating the water goddess look you were born to wear!
