Here's what you can do to make your sleeping routine one that's good for your hair.

Easy Bedtime Care Routine

We’ve all experienced it--the dreaded bad hair day. So what can you do to avoid waking up with a bedhead? Here’s an easy bedtime care routine that will have your locks looking gorgeous in no time. 


Shampoo and Condition

Washing your hair too often can strip your hair of the oils it needs to be healthy. But when you do wash, showering at night is best. You’ll wash off all the buildup from the day, and your hair has a chance to dry naturally instead of rushing to dry it before work, school, or any other daytime activity.

Don’t be tempted to skip the conditioner. Since shampooing opens your hair’s cuticles, it’s important to seal them again with conditioner, so your hair stays hydrated and is less likely to break.

Dry Your Hair

If you shower at night, you should wait until your hair is dry before going to bed. Wet hair breaks easily. Unfortunately, heat also damages hair, and so does rubbing your hair too hard with a towel.

Instead, use a soft towel to blot moisture from your hair. Then, allow it to air dry if possible. Your hair will be healthier and less likely to break during the night.

Detangle

If you go to bed with tangles in your hair, they’re only likely to get worse by morning. As you roll in your sleep, more hair is tangled around the knots, and you’ll wake up to a matted mess.

Gently detangle your hair before bed. Then, brush your hair from root to tip to help spread your natural oils through your hair.

Braid or Wrap Your Hair

If you like to sleep with your hair up, choose a loose braid that won’t stress your hair. And be mindful of how you secure it. Silk or satin hair ties are the best choice to avoid damaging your tresses. 

Alternatively, use a hair wrap to secure your hair overnight. Again, silky fabrics are best. You’ll prevent your hair from tangling, hold in moisture, and reduce the friction that causes frizz. 

Sleep on a Satin or Silk Pillowcase

How many times do we see the most beautiful matching bed sets and want them for our beds? We get it. The coordination just pulls the whole room together. Ahhh. 

But the pillowcases? Well, in most cases, they aren’t doing your hair any favors. That’s because materials like cotton absorb moisture, leaving your hair dry and creating lots of friction as you toss and turn. 

Instead, opt for a silk or satin pillowcase. More moisture will stay in your tresses where it belongs, and the smoother fabric will create less friction. You’ll wake up with more hydrated, smoother locks instead of a tangled, frizzy mess. And you can just tuck them behind other pillows during the day to keep your coordinated look. 

Your bedtime routine doesn’t have to be long and complicated. Just follow these five easy steps, and you’ll be on your way to waking up to a good hair day, every day.
