How do I Select the Best Shampoo Bar for My Type of Hair?

Did you know there’s a good chance you’ve been using the wrong shampoo? That’s because we tend to choose shampoo based on our hair type, but choosing based on your scalp type is far more effective.
Are you shaken to your core? Relax. We’ve got you covered. Let’s take a look at how to select the best shampoo bar for your type of hair (scalp).
Dry
If your scalp is dry, you likely experience dandruff. You may also have another skin condition like psoriasis or seborrheic dermatitis. All of these conditions lead to irritation, so it’s important to heal your scalp. That, in turn, will nourish your hair.
Fortunately, we have two options that are awesome for dry hair: Hidden Waterfall and Terrace Garden.
Dry hair is often prone to breakage. Both bars contain natural ingredients like Longsheng rice, bamboo, aloe vera, shea butter, and cocoa butter to soothe irritated skin, add moisture, and strengthen and repair your hair.
Normal
If your hair is normal, washing every two to four days is probably ideal for you. Within that time frame, you don’t notice much (if any) dandruff, and your hair doesn’t get too oily.
Having normal hair means you can use any of our shampoo bars. All of our bars are formulated to strengthen and repair hair, increase shine and growth, and moisturize, so you can choose by scent.
Terrace Garden has a fresh, green, floral scent. Prefer something sweet? Hidden Waterfall is a musky vanilla reminiscent of the amber aroma we experienced on the forest paths that lead to the hidden Longsheng waterfalls. Or maybe you’re more of a fun and fruity type. Try Citrus Yao for a lovely citrus scent.
Oily
Do you have to wash your hair every 24 hours to keep it from looking greasy? We get it. And we have a shampoo bar to help.
Citrus Yao is perfect for oily to dry hair. In addition to all the benefits our other bars offer, Citrus Yao contains citrus, which breaks down sebum.
Sebum is an oily, yellow secretion produced by glands in your body. It’s totally normal and helps keep your skin from drying out. It even helps protect you from infection! However, some people produce more sebum than necessary, resulting in oily skin and acne.
If your body naturally produces a lot of sebum, Citrus Yao is a good choice to break down the excess and leave you with healthy, shiny hair. Plus, it smells great!
Still undecided? Send us a message through our chat feature. We’ll ask you a few questions about your hair and scalp and recommend the best bar for your individual hair type.
One more bit of advice: don’t forget the conditioner! Shampoo opens your cuticles and allows them to be cleaned. Conditioner seals them up again.
Think of it as complete hair care. If you leave your cuticles open, you’re also opening the door to damage and breakage.
Like our shampoo bars, our conditioner bars are formulated with the same Longsheng rice the Red Yao women have used for centuries to keep their legendary hair healthy and strong. You can check them out here.
