At Viori, part of our mission is to reinvest portions of our profits into the Beautiful Reason Initiative (BRI), funding projects that directly support the Red Yao community. Supporting a community comes with its own set of challenges and complexities, which is why we have always followed a simple guiding principle: we only provide support in areas where the locals themselves feel they need help. To ensure we truly understand their needs, we conduct monthly visits and an annual survey to dive deep into the local priorities.
One recurring need that has consistently come up in these surveys is infrastructure improvements, particularly the installation of streetlights. For many remote villages in Longsheng, the absence of streetlights presents a significant challenge. Much of the daily work around homes is done both indoors and outdoors, often extending into the evening. Without proper lighting, villagers rely on flashlights to navigate after dark, which can be especially difficult for elderly residents. Additionally, with the rise of cars and motorbikes in the area, unlit roads can be dangerous for pedestrians and drivers alike.
Understanding this need, Viori recently supported the installation of streetlights in some of the more remote villages of Longsheng. These lights are being placed in two main areas: in front of homes to improve household safety and functionality, and along roads to reduce the risk of accidents and make travel easier for everyone.
Unfortunately, not all villages and houses in Longsheng have access to streetlights. Budget constraints at the local government level often mean that only the main villages and roads are prioritized for such improvements, leaving more remote areas in the dark—literally. This is where Viori steps in. Through the BRI, our hope is to fill this gap by providing streetlights to all the houses and villages that were overlooked and who express a desire for this practical and long-lasting improvement.
The impact of these streetlights has been reflected in the positive feedback from villagers. Many have shared that they feel safer and more productive, whether it’s navigating the roads at night or completing evening tasks around their homes. While we know there is still much to do, we are committed to working alongside the Red Yao to expand this initiative and bring light to even more villages in the future.
We are grateful to all of our supporters who make projects like this possible. Your support allows us to collaborate with the Red Yao community in meaningful ways and ensure their needs are heard and addressed.
