Protect your hair from UV damage-- here's how.

7 Tips to Protect Your Hair from UV Damage

Summer is in full swing, and you may have noticed that your hair is a bit, well…baked. Unfortunately, having fun in the sun can be harsh on your hair. But it’s not too late to save your tresses. Here are 7 tips to protect your hair from UV damage.

Use SPF

You know you should use sunscreen on your skin, but did you know you should use SPF on your hair, too? Both UVA and UVB rays are capable of damaging your tresses, so before you head outdoors, apply a protective spray or cream that’s formulated for hair. And don’t forget that your part is especially susceptible to damage from UV rays, so be generous with the SPF there.

Wear a Hat

A wide-brimmed hat doesn’t just look super cute. It’s your new best friend when it comes to protecting your strands from UV damage. A good hat will block UV rays from reaching your hair, particularly if you wear it up in a low bun or similar style that keeps it in the protective shade cast by your hat.

Don a Scarf

Hats aren’t your thing? A scarf provides good protection, too. Just be sure to completely cover your hair. There are plenty of chic styles to choose from. Plus, scarves are lightweight, and you won’t have to worry about them blowing off in the wind.

Use an Umbrella

Channel your inner Victorian dream girl, and carry a parasol when you’re out in the sun. It’s a fun accessory that provides you with shade, too. Alternatively, use a regular umbrella when you’re out and about, and take advantage of large umbrellas when you’re at the beach or sitting at a picnic table. You’ll protect your hair and probably enjoy your day more, too, when you can take a break from the blazing sun.

Skip the Bleach

While beachy blonde locks and sun-kissed highlights may occupy your daydreams, the reality can be very different. That’s because bleach already makes your hair fragile due to its destructive effect on your hair’s keratin. Combine that with UV rays, and you may find that an alarming number of your strands are breaking off. So give your hair a vacation from bleach this summer. Odds are it’ll naturally get lighter during the time you’re outside anyway.

Take a Hiatus from Heat

Like bleach, heat tools also damage your hair. So when you compound the damage from heat tools with the damage from UV rays, your hair can get into serious trouble. Instead, try these no-heat styles. They’re perfect for summer, and you’ll look amazing without making your hair vulnerable to increased UV damage.

Use Good Timing

While it may seem fun to spend all day at the beach or the pool or the amusement park, that’s a whole lot of exposure to UV rays. Instead, enjoy indoor or shaded activities in the middle of the day, when the sun’s rays are the strongest, and limit outdoor activities to early morning or late evening. Campfire and s’mores, anyone?

UV rays are always a concern, but with a little TLC, you can protect your hair from UV damage this summer (and the rest of the year, too!). Try these tips next time you venture into the sun, and don’t forget to keep your hair in top shape with your favorite Viori bars.
