The Red Yao are known for using fermented rice water as their primary hair treatment for centuries. Their hair routinely grows past six feet. This bar puts that tradition into a format you can use in the shower.

1. Wet your hair thoroughly with warm water — rinsing with warm water before you lather helps prep the scalp so the bar can work at the root.
2. Rub the bar directly between your palms for a few seconds to build a lather, or glide it gently over your wet scalp two to three times.
3. Work the lather into your scalp with your fingertips using small circular motions — focus on the roots where buildup tends to sit, especially if you're in a hard-water area.
4. Let the lather travel down the length of your hair as you rinse; you don't need to scrub the ends separately.
5. Rinse thoroughly with cool or warm water until the water runs completely clear and your scalp feels clean, not coated — this is how you know there's no residue left behind.
