It’s summer, and you’re sweating. The humidity is crazy. And everything from your sunscreen, to your styling products, to the hat you wear on the beach seems to add another layer of grease to your hair.
If you have oily hair, it can seem like you’ll never win the battle to have hair that looks and feels clean. So what can you do if, despite your best efforts, your hair is still greasy? Try a DIY hair care mask. Here are a few made with natural ingredients that will help you cut through the oil and leave your hair looking healthy and grease-free.
Oil-Absorbing Baking Soda Mask
You probably reach for dry shampoo pretty often if you have oily hair, and this mask builds upon that concept, using baking soda to absorb the oil from your hair. Simply combine one tablespoon of baking soda with a few drops of tea tree oil, and voila, you have an oil-absorbing mask.
Apply the mask to your roots and let it sit for 30 minutes. Then, wash it out with shampoo that doesn’t contain irritating sulfates. We recommend Citrus Yao.
Boozy Apple Mask
If you have a can of beer and an apple, you have everything you need to make this oil-fighting mask. The combination of malic acid and alcohol cuts through grease and helps dry your hair.
Just mash the apple and mix it with one tablespoon of beer to form a paste. Spread the paste over your hair and let it rest for 20 minutes before washing.
Aloe, Lemon, and Honey Mask
Citrus is wonderful for cutting through oil, and aloe vera is totally soothing. This mask features both. Add one tablespoon each of aloe vera gel, lemon juice, and honey to a bowl. Separate an egg, and add just the yolk to the other ingredients.
Mix it all up, and apply it to your roots. Keep the mask on for 20 minutes, and then wash and condition as usual.
Oil and Vinegar Mask
No, we’re not talking about salad dressing. This mask uses apple cider vinegar and lavender essential oil to rid your hair of excess sebum.
Whip it up by stirring together one tablespoon each of water and apple cider vinegar, along with a few drops of lavender essential oil. Massage it into your hair, and rinse after 15 minutes. So easy!
Creamy Yogurt Mask
Have a tub of plain yogurt in the fridge? Put it to good use for your hair! You’ll need half a cup of plain yogurt, one teaspoon of apple cider vinegar, and one teaspoon of honey for this mask. Combine the ingredients and apply the mask all over your hair.
Let your hair soak up all the nourishing ingredients in this mask for 15 minutes, and then rinse with warm water. Enjoy your soft, shiny hair without all the grease!
Summer can be challenging when you have oily hair, but you can keep the oil at bay. Try adding one (or all!) of these oil-busting masks to your routine, and let us know how it goes!
